The idea for ‘Heartbreak One’ came about through my counseling work for substance use and mental health facilities around the Bay Area. I do a handful of these groups with teens. We use songs as a way for them to access feelings. Sometimes folks will choose a song that reminds them of their first breakup. One of the kids said to the group ‘I’ll never love again.’ Seeing and hearing how crushed this person was, I flashed back to my first heartbreak and remembered just how brutal that was. That first one hurts so bad. There’s nothing like it. – GL
